Nix Cristobal Calma (they/them/siya) is an abstract, mixed-media artist. Their art is influenced by race, disability, mental health, queerness, fatness, and sexuality. They are interested in the liminal spaces created by intersecting identities, and examine the displacement, erasure, and fetishization of racialized, queer/trans, and fat bodies.

Propelled by their own experiences of marginalization, Nix intentionally uses art as a conduit for critical thinking. They are motivated by the possibility of a provocative interaction or resonance between their art and the viewer.

Nix’s work has been featured in various local group exhibitions, and international online exhibitions and publications. They are a co-founder of Matter Queer Space Manitoba Inc. (Matter), a 2SQTBIPOC-mandated art gallery, library, and 2SLGBTQIA+ community space launched in December 2024.

Born in a small town in Pampanga, northwest of Manila (Philippines), Nix moved to Treaty 1 at 19 years old. In their current and evolving practice, Nix is working towards incorporating themes of origin, ancestry, and pre-colonial identity, with motifs of traditional Filipino tattooing (batok) and woven textiles.
